NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (2-minute read) — A fatal home invasion occurred on July 13, 2024, at 636 Capeside Drive in New Hanover County, resulting in the death of 74-year-old David Rose and critical injuries to 62-year-old homeowner Rodney Jester. According to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began early Saturday morning when Rose attempted to forcefully enter Jester’s home.

Around 3 a.m., David Rose rang the doorbell and began pounding on the front door, waking Rodney Jester and his wife. Upon answering the door, Jester was immediately shot by Rose. In the chaos that followed, as Rose attempted to enter the home, Jester’s wife tried to shut the door. Acting quickly to defend his wife and himself, Jester grabbed his firearm and fired a single shot through the door, striking Rose in the head.

Jester was transported to Novant Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a comprehensive investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the event.

Sheriff McMahon commented on the situation, stating, “Last night, a homeowner faced a grave threat when a suspect tried to forcibly enter his home. In defense of his life and property, the homeowner acted within his rights.” The Sheriff’s Office, in consultation with District Attorney Ben David, has decided not to press charges against Jester.
