Authorities in Harris County are investigating a fatal shooting after a man allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and was shot by her son. The case may be sent to a grand jury to determine if the shooting was legally justified under Texas self-defense laws.

HARRIS COUNTY, TX (2-minute read) — Authorities in northeast Harris County are investigating a late-night fatal shooting involving a suspected home invasion. Deputies responded to a call on the 12400 block of West Village Drive, where they discovered 38-year-old Wilbert Tayes suffering from a gunshot wound outside a residence. Tayes was transported to a nearby trauma center, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Michael Ritchie, Tayes had allegedly attempted to force his way into his ex-girlfriend’s home by kicking in the front door. Once inside, he reportedly confronted and attempted to assault her 24-year-old son. In response, the young man retrieved a firearm and fired at Tayes, stopping the attack.
At this time, authorities have not determined whether the shooter will face charges. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated that the case would likely be referred to a grand jury to assess whether the son acted in legal self-defense under Texas law. Texas is known for its robust self-defense laws, including the Castle Doctrine, which permits homeowners to use deadly force if they reasonably believe an intruder poses a threat to their safety.
As the investigation continues, authorities will gather more details to determine whether any legal action will be taken against the shooter.
