Mounting a scope starts with the stock, not the scope

November 5, 2026

The first step in Tactical Rifleman's scope-mounting clip is to leave the scope alone. Most good stocks now adjust for comb height and length, so the video has you fit the rifle to the shooter first, then bring the scope to the rifle.

Key points

  • Stock first: Size the stock to the shooter before touching the scope. For most people, that means long enough to reach the bend in the elbow.
  • Loose in the rings: Set the scope loosely in the rings, then mount it on the rifle so it sits level and roughly where you want it.
  • Eye relief: Get behind the rifle and check that eye relief is close. The video says it only needs to be about right at this stage.

Quick take

This runs under a minute and only covers the first steps, so treat it as the right order of operations rather than a complete mounting guide. The useful part is the sequence: fit the stock, then position the scope.
