Walther Arms, Inc. is re-introducing one of the most iconic pistols of all time, the Walther PPK/S chambered in .32 ACP. .32ACP was the original chambering when these guns were first developed during the late 1920s, and the Walther PPK/S is the modern stainless steel version of the German Walther PPK/ PP. These new versions operate the same as the original but have slightly nuanced differences, such as the slightly bigger beavertail on the frame meant to provide more protection from slide bite compared to the original designs. This historic handgun family operates from a simple straight blowback mechanism which is suitable for pocket pistol rounds like .32 ACP or .380 ACP.
The viability of the .32 ACP cartridge as a suitable “pocket pistol” round for self defense still holds some way amongst some serious defensively oriented students, trainers and practitioners. The .32 ACP cartridge is typically loaded with lighter 71 grain FMJ bullets with a very moderate muzzle blast and equally moderate felt recoil. The trade-off from shooting this gentle cartridge from a pocket pistol is penetration. Projectiles don’t generate enough kinetic energy to expand as they would from a larger duty cartridge such as the 9mm, but FMJ bullets used in this context still have excellent penetration abilities.
